Microdosing is a fascinating practice because it’s so counter intuitive.
It requires a fresh pair of eyes and a new perspective in order to be fully understood.
With some time, research and personal experience, we eventually transform ourselves from newbies to mindful pros.
The Microdosing Learning Curve
Microdosing teaches us so much about the intelligence of the 3rd kingdom (aka fungi) but we learn a tremendous amount about ourselves.
The practice of microdosing isn’t about precise rules or exact protocols, but rather loose recommendations.
Recommendations are made as loose guidelines. Humble experimentation is encouraged in order for each microdoser to eventually create a unique and curated personal protocol to suit individual needs and preferences.
In other words, we all know what chicken soup is but we each have our own unique recipes.
Here below I will take you through the stages you are likely to experience going from newbie to pro.
Stage 1: The Curious Beginner
You’re here because you’ve heard about the potential benefits of microdosing. Maybe you’ve even taken your first few doses.
At this stage, it’s all about:
- Understanding the basics of microdosing
- Learning about different protocols
- Journaling habits, behaviours, memories and new perspectives
- Tracking the doses to best understand effects, moods and reactions
Stage 2: The Consistent Explorer
Now you’re getting into a rhythm. You’ve found a protocol that works for you, and you’re starting to notice subtle changes.
This stage is characterised by:
- Finding the initial ‘sweet spot‘ dose
- Sticking to a consistent microdosing schedule aka ‘protocol’
- Review of past journal entries and dosage logs to learn from past experiences
- Completed at least 1 microdosing cycle (6-8 weeks)
Stage 3: The Mindful Practitioner
This is where the magic really starts to happen. You’re not just taking your dose; you’re integrating the practice into your life.
At this stage, you’re:
- Understanding that the Sweet Spot dose can change over time
- Combining microdosing with other wellness practices such breath work, meditation or yoga
- Understanding how different factors (caffeine, sleep, medications) interact with the microdosing practice
- Adding functional mushrooms to your microdosing protocol aka Stacking
Stage 4: The Intuitive Pro
Welcome to the big leagues! As a microdosing pro, you’ve developed an intuitive understanding of how psilocybin works with your unique physiology and lifestyle. You’re:
- Experimenting with most advanced protocol aka the Neurogenesis Stack
- Helping other community members understand and navigate their own microdosing journeys aka Each One Teach One
- Continually educating oneself on the latest research and developments in the field
- Growing our own batch of mushies
Tips for Levelling Up Your Microdosing Game
1. Master the Art of Noticing
Microdosing is a practice that unlocks subtle but potent changes in us and in our lives. Learning to notice small changes in your mood, energy, and perception is the skill that must be nurtured and optimised. Once we see microdosing’s impact in our lives, we can’t un-see them.
2. Embrace the Power of Journaling
A journaling practice is our biggest ally when microdosing and also in life generally speaking. Aside from tracking the dosage, noticing our subconcious thoughts can be a tricky undertaking. Our innermost thoughts and feelings can be very elusive, even from us. Slowing down our thought patterns by writing them down on paper or typing them into a screen is likely to unlock something you never knew was there all along.
3. Experiment Mindfully
Microdosing happens to require a considerable amount of experimentation, but the experimentation in question must be patient, measured and well researched.
Be patient with your practice. Notice your expectations regarding results and timelines. Be well informed about various strains, suppliers and methods of consumption.
Know the rules before breaking them. Hold onto reverence and remember to cherish these compounds.
4. Integrate Other Practices
Microdosing doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Explore how it interacts with meditation, exercise, breath work, or other wellness practices. I’ve written about additional practices you can do while microdosing and about various supplements that you can include in your microdosing practice.
5. Educate Yourself Continuously
In the last 15 years, the library of knowledge has never been more plentiful or accessible. You can learn more by reading our collection of over 60 blogs, joining Reddit chat rooms, or reading books by pioneers in the field like James Fadiman.
Where ever you get your knowledge from, keep at it and don’t stop. The more we learn about fungi, the more we realise how much more there is to learn.
6. Listen to Your Body
As you become more experienced, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of your body’s signals with time, you might choose to skip a dose altogether and end up on the intuitive protocol. This is normal. Over time, you will become more and more in tune with yourself and therefore microdose accordingly.
7. Each One Teach One
Each One Teach One is my personal motto reminding us that we each have the responsibility to pass on what we have learned to newbies who are coming into this world full of curiosity and questions.
It is upon each of us to teach the next person how to be responsible and how to be effective.
The Pro Mindset: It’s Not About the Destination
As you probably know, psilocybin gives us what we need and not what we ask for. In other words, it’s not a silver bullet, but thankfully integration is fully baked into the practice.
The more experienced you become, the more you will know what you need, when you need it and how you need it.
