Journaling is one of those activities that pay endless dividends.
Journaling daily helps us to define our intentions moving forward, helps us process our emotions, and according to Dr. Andrew Huberman, even reduces our cortisol levels and helps to process traumatic events.
An important consideration is that journaling can be too confronting for some of us so I’ve listed some creative ways to get your emotions out.
I’ve also included some journaling resources and techniques that preserve precious memories that we can revisit in the future and share with our loved ones.
1. Morning Pages: The Classic Creativity Kickstarter
Ever heard of Julia Cameron’s “The Artist’s Way”? If not, you’re in for a treat. Morning Pages is all about brain-dumping three pages of unfiltered thoughts first thing in the morning. It’s like a mental detox that clears out the cobwebs and makes room for those brilliant ideas to flow.
2. 750words.com: Digital Journaling with a Twist
For the digital natives among us, 750words.com is a game-changer. It’s like Morning Pages but for the keyboard warriors. Plus, it gives you cool stats about your writing speed and mood. Who knew journaling could be so… data-driven?
3. Photo Log: A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Words
Not much of a writer? No problem! Try capturing one meaningful photo a day. It’s a great way to visually document your life’s little moments. And hey, it might even up your Instagram game!
4. Voice Notes: For the Chatty Cathys
If you’re more of a talker than a writer, voice notes are your new best friend. Just hit record and spill your thoughts. It’s perfect for those on-the-go moments when inspiration strikes.
5. Penzu: For the Secretly Sentimental
Privacy freaks, rejoice! Penzu is a free, encrypted online journal. It’s like having a digital diary with a really, really good lock.
6. Memory Jars: Bottling Up Happiness
Here’s a fun one: jot down happy thoughts on scraps of paper and toss them in a jar. It’s like creating your own time capsule of joy. At the end of the year, go through the jar and re-live each miraculous moment all over again! Future you will thank present you for this one.
7. Painting or Doodling: Let Your Inner Artist Loose
Who says journaling has to involve words? Grab some colours and let your emotions flow onto the page. No artistic skills required—just pure, unadulterated self-expression. You might discover some hidden talents you never knew existed.
8. ZenPen.io: For the digital minimalists
This free tool is an excellent way of typing without any visual distractions. I love the layout and how clean it is. The blank screen is just like a blank page, inspiring and somewhat anxiety-inducing. It’s a simple layout. Available in all white or black. Easy to save your writings to your laptop and complete with a word count feature to make sure you hit your daily word target.
9. StoryWorth: For the Legacy Makers (Not Free, But SO Worth It!)
Okay, this one’s not free, but it’s too cool not to mention. StoryWorth helps you turn your life stories into a beautiful book. Answer the questions provided and receive a ready made book that is perfect for the coffee table, as a gift or as a family heirloom.
10. Notion: For the PKM Biohackers Among Us
Last but not least, you can journal via our very own Notion database. If you are a PKM (Personal Knowledge Management) fanatic, this is an excellent free way to track your moods, your microdoses and everything else in your life. Of course, we have our very own template available for you to use immediately. You’re welcome! x
