I’m not sure about you guys, but I love watching musical documentaries.
One of my favourites is the Quincy Jones documentary on Netflix.
Did you guys know that the history of psychedelics goes back over 130 years?!
While researching for the 2nd edition of our psychedelic music series, I found a great documentary taking us back to 1894. Yes, 1894…not 1984
I learned so much about the context of the creation of this genre and its widespread influence on other bands and artists.
What a perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon!
What Makes It Psychedelic?
But first, what defines this genre exactly? What are the parameters that define certain music as more or less psychedelic?
The editor of Psychedelic Scene magazine explains it in the only way it can be explained:
“Just as the psychedelic experience itself is ineffable, the music style is also incredibly difficult to describe.”
Not Very Helpful, I Know 😆
Some of the defining aspects of this musical style are the era and environment where the music was created.
Specific instruments like exotic instruments, or Eastern influences. Certain distinct studio effects, radical production, and/or recording techniques.
Obscure sounds, and moods. Uncharted musical territory combined with descriptive lyrics.
Just a few of the above criteria and we can begin to define what the psychedelic genre sounds like.
Did You Know?
Who were the genesis of psychedelic soul?
Apparently, Sly & The Family Stone had a major impact on music in general with songs like I want to Take You Higher
They were a major influence on The Temptations and their track Papa Was A Rolling Stone.
It’s pointless to even try and encapsulate the profound effect of The Temptations on music and musicians in general, so you get the idea.
Sly and the Family Stone is really a major musical catalyst that is worth rediscovering.
More NoteWorthy Playlists
If you’ve got extra time on your hands, you can shuffle through these 178 psychedelic tracks from the 60s and 70s.
If you are feeling something more current in terms of musical instruments and technology, this Psychedelic Deep Trance & Psychill Music Mix is more synth, less vocals, then play this and see how it lands
Or how about this psychedelic chill mix playlist? It’s very relaxing and perfect for cooking, gardening, or napping.
