Are you using the mycelium or the fruiting bodies of the Chaga mushroom?
To answer this, we need to do a bit of an explanation of what Chaga is. Chaga is a dark and dense mass that grows on birch trees. Technically, it’s not really a mushroom, but it’s made up of parts of the birch tree and a type of fungus.
There are two parts of Chaga that look different, even though they’re both from the same fungus. One is the outside growth that we can see, which we call a canker. The other part is hidden under the tree bark and looks like a big, flat, grayish mass with little holes that make seeds for the fungus. This is the fruiting body.
Our Chaga extract is made of fruiting bodies. A small amount of mycelium may still be present in the extract, but this is only a result of harvesting the fruiting bodies. Our extracts are not fruiting bodies plus mycelium extracts.
Many brands on the market do contain both fruiting bodies and mycelium, but this is mostly done for economic purposes, as it makes the production of functional mushroom extracts way cheaper. It is often done to save money and results in less potent extracts.
