Five Must-Watch Fungi Documentaries (Part 2 of 2)

Fungi Documentaries 2

The holiday season is approaching so I wanted to make sure that you have something fascinating and wholesome to watch.

Here is part 2 of my latest fungi documentary list and I suspect there are at least a couple here that you have never seen before and will teach you something new. We think we understand what is going on around us and underneath our feet. These films will replace some of that certainty with fascination and wonder.

1. “Fantastic Fungi” Official Trailer (2019)

Summary: If you haven’t seen this masterpiece yet, prepare to have your mind expanded! Directed by Louie Schwartzberg, this film is pure magic. Not only does it feature the brilliant Paul Stamets (yes, the same mycologist whose protocol we often discuss!), but the time-lapse photography will leave you speechless.

What makes this film special is how it connects the dots between fungi, healing, and our planet’s future. It’s like watching poetry in motion but with mushrooms!

2. “The Magic of Mushrooms” by BBC Earth Lab

Summary: This BBC gem takes us on a journey through the incredible capabilities of mushrooms. From breaking down dead matter to forming partnerships with plants, this documentary shows us just how clever fungi really are.

Fun fact: Did you know that fungi are being used to create sustainable materials and clean up environmental pollution? Now that’s what I call flow state on a planetary scale!

3. “The Largest Organism on Earth” by Deep Look

Summary: Ready for something that will make you question everything you thought you knew about size? Meet the “Humongous Fungus” – an Armillaria ostoyae that spans over 2,200 acres in Oregon.

Just imagine – while we’re going about our daily lives, this massive underground network has been quietly growing and connecting for thousands of years. Mind-blowing, right?

4. “Fungi: The Fifth Kingdom”

Link: Watch on YouTube

Summary: This one’s for all you science lovers out there! If you’ve ever wondered why fungi deserve their own kingdom separate from plants and animals, this documentary will illuminate you. It’s packed with fascinating details about fungal biology, their reproductive strategies, and their crucial role in Earth’s ecosystems. The kind of documentary that makes you say “wow” out loud!

5. “Mushrooms: The Future of Sustainable Food?” by BBC Reel

Link: Watch on YouTube

Summary: Sustainable solutions are no longer a nice-to-have goal, these are now must-haves for both corporations and individuals. This BBC Reel documentary showcases how fungi are revolutionizing everything from meat alternatives to eco-friendly packaging.

Bonus: “The Hidden Life of Trees and Fungi” by BBC Radio 4

Summary: The Internet of Things is not a phenomenon that came to life a few decades ago. Rather “Wood Wide Web” has been around longer than humans have roamed the earth. Nature’s indigenous internet will change how you see the world around you and under your feet.

Flowing Forward

So it’s still wintertime in the northern hemisphere which means you can still go out into the woods, get up close and see if you can find some mushrooms coming up in your mycelial neighbourhood.

Now that you understand a little more about what’s going on and what to look for, you might find some treasures you never even realised were there.

Be sure to watch the first batch of epic fungi documentaries here.

Now that you’ve seen a few, I’m curious, which was your favourite?
