Since others may face similar issues, here are a few common reasons mushroom kits can take a wrong turn, even when the instructions are followed:
-- Missed harvest window
Once the mushrooms sprout, they can grow fast. If the hats open fully or start to drop spores, they’re already past their peak. Waiting too long can lead to rot or blackening.
-- Too much humidity, not enough fresh air
Mushrooms love moisture, but stagnant, overly humid air can lead to mould. It’s important to give them some airflow each day, a few seconds of fresh air can make all the difference.
-- Poor room hygiene or airborne particles
Contaminants can come from open windows, pets, dusty surfaces, or even unwashed hands when handling the bag.
-- Proximity to air conditioning
In summer, if the grow kit is near an AC unit (especially one with an old or dusty filter), airborne particles can spread and settle on the kit. Strong airflow or temperature swings can also disturb the mycelium.
-- Handling the kit directly
Touching the substrate or using non-sterile tools can accidentally introduce contaminants.
